Preparing for a Move to a 55+ Resort-Style Community

If you’ve been in a cherished family home for decades, the prospect of packing it up and moving can feel overwhelming. Moving to an active community offers a host of benefits, but taking those first steps can be challenging. It may have been decades since your last move. Fortunately, with some planning and a little help, you can substantially reduce the stress of relocation.

How Much Help Will You Need?

Before you get started, it’s important to evaluate how much help you’ll need. Do you have any physical limitations that need to be taken into consideration? Moving is a strenuous activity filled with hours of bending, lifting, and moving heavy objects. Even if you’re in great health, the sheer scale of moving an entire house usually requires having a few people on hand for lifting furniture and carrying stacks of boxes. You may be able to use your family and friends, but hiring a moving company might also be necessary.

Start Early, Get Organized, and Give Yourself Plenty of Time

As soon as you start thinking about moving out of a large family home, it’s a good idea to get started sorting, packing, and preparing. The earlier you start, the easier it is to get everything done without rushing. When you’re moving out of a home you’ve inhabited for many years, the process usually takes longer than you think. Keep a master to-do list or create a timeline or checklist to help you stay on track.

Sorting and Packing Basics

Before you dive into sorting and packing, make sure you have all the supplies you need, like boxes, bubble wrap, and markers. Sort as you go, with piles for items you’re keeping, things you’re donating to charity, items going to friends and family, and things that need to be tossed. If you’re selling anything, you’ll want to set aside space for that as well. Do one room at a time, keep boxes under 50 pounds, and label boxes prominently so you know their contents. Color-coding with stickers is also helpful. It’s often easiest to start with the areas of your home that you use the least.

Do Some Serious Downsizing

As you’re sorting and packing, try to put as many things as possible into the piles for donations, giveaways to friend and family, and trash. If you have a floorplan of your new home, that can help you determine how much space is available for your furniture and other belongings.
